Sixteen

Cars and boys
 make up the age
Sixteen.
Parties and homework
all on weekends at
Sixteen.
This is only the persona
of a typical girl of
Sixteen.
What then is the
ego of a girl of
Sixteen?
When she cuts
it's to relieve
pain,
 anger,
   and sadness.
it's to cry out in desperation
for help.
When the feeling of despair
is too much to bear,
the girl goes to a
knife and
cuts.
A slice could end a delicate life,
but instead she chooses
to cry for
help.
When she drinks
its to
escape...
   succumb...
empty herself of hate.
She'd rather kill her body
day by day
ever so slowly
than kill her pride
and say, "Help me!"
When she laughs
while saying
"I tried to kill myself."
is it nervousness or
pure mental madness?
Who knows who cares?!
Just help the ones
who need help
whether they know it
or not.
because life can't be bought.
Save a life.
One doesn't have to end at
Sixteen.

  1. I'm usually not a fan of poems that don't rhyme (being a Shel Silverstein kind of reader), but I enjoyed this one a lot. Even though it didn't rhyme, it still had a very strong rhythm to it. In fact, I think that's it's better that it didn't rhyme, adding to the seriousness of the subject.
