Michelangelo's Saying Critique

"I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free."
I love this saying. It's short, simple and to the point. Michelangelo saw the angel. He saw it and he let it free. No if, and, or buts about it. I envision a white haired old man staring at a large block of white marble, scrutiny on his wrinkled face. Then, a smile of pure joy radiates through him and an angel burst out of the marble, light shining on everything! This is what I see in my minds eye when I read this line. You know why? Because he looked beyond what was on the outside. He did not just see a huge 6 foot tall slab of white rock. Oh no. He saw an exquisite angel with pure, white, silvery wings and a mop of curly hair with eyes that spoke of joy. Joy because of how somebody bothered to look deep down and find what was buried within. That man, that white-haired, wrinkled old man probably ascended into Heaven when he passed on because he knew how to look and see, not just look. If everyone alive today heard that phrase and acknowledged it, do you think it would make a difference in the world?

  1. Gabby, honey. I wish to talk about this with you. That's something I've imagined too, but in a different context. We really aren't so different, you and I. I want to talk to you!!!!!
